
Abstract:
The Glimpses of Chinese Culture is the final completed manuscript by the late Professor Léon Vandermeersch, and reflects his lifelong dedication to Chinese culture. The book consists of 22 lectures divided into four parts: (1) The relationship between ancient scripts and early Chinese thought; (2) Studies on Confucian classics and Confucianism; (3) Reflections on ancient Chinese philosophy, law, and art; (4) Personal recollections of Professor Jao Tsung-I and an overview of his academic journey. Additionally, the book includes five supplementary pieces such as interviews and a chronological biography, providing a comprehensive view of Professor Léon Vandermeersch’s insights into Chinese culture. It reflects his outstanding contributions to Sino-French cultural exchange and stands as a significant intellectual legacy to the global academic community. The publication of this book is also a sincere tribute to Professor Léon Vandermeersch.
About the Author:
Léon Vandermeersch (Jan 7, 1928–Oct 17, 2021), is a distinguished academician of the Institut de France, a world-renowned Sinologist, and an academic advisor of the Jao Tsung-I Institute of Culture Studies. In the 1960s, he studied Chinese paleography and linguistics under Professor Jao Tsung-I in Hong Kong. He served as Chair of Chinese Studies at Université Paris Diderot - Paris VII, Researcher at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, and Director of the French School of the Far East. He was awarded the “Prix Stanislas Julien” by the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres in 1980 and the “Special Book Award of China” by the General Administration of Press and Publication in 2016.
